History and origins of the Dartmoor
The Dartmoor region, in the South-West of England, gave its name to the small, hardy pony we know today.
Originally, it was a wild pony shaped and selected by the arid climate and harsh conditions. From the 11th century onwards, it was used by humans for agricultural work, a resilient, practical companion with a good temperament but an unattractive physique.
Wars and mechanization in the 19th and 20th centuries led to a decline in the number of Dartmoor ponies in England. The breed survived thanks to its use in mines.
At the end of the 19th century, the National Pony Society was formed to catalog and preserve the original pony breeds in England, including the Dartmoor.
