History and Origins of the Fjord
The exact origin of the Fjord is unknown. It is likely that the breed descends from the Tarpan, an extinct breed of wild European equids. Viking tombs show that they bred Fjords, hence their name "Viking horses."
Due to interactions between Norway, Iceland, and the British Isles over the centuries, Fjords have experienced many variations in size and morphology depending on their uses. In 1843, Norway decided to improve the breed by crossing it with Døle Gudbrandsdal horses. Long used for agricultural work, the breed spread, and few cross-breedings were carried out.
The Norwegian Stud-Book was created in 1910, and the Swedish breed association in 1961. Fjord breeding was stabilized and is now done as a purebred.
