History and Origins of the Curly Horse

The origins of the Curly horse breed are unclear. Evidence of its presence has been identified in South America and Europe in the past.

Its arrival in North America dates back to the 1800s, when Sioux tribes domesticated Curly horses for riding. Curly horses were then crossbred with many other breeds such as the Quarter Horse, Morgan, Appaloosa, and Missouri Fox-Trotter.

The modern Curly Horse is therefore the product of numerous cross-breedings, which explains the lack of homogeneity among individuals of the breed. In 1971, the American Bashkir Curly Horse Registry was created to protect the breed, whose numbers were low, and since 1990, cross-breeding has been prohibited. Today, there are only 4,000 specimens worldwide.

Although it does not have a French Stud-Book, in 2012, the Curly Horse was authorized to participate in official competitions under the title of "Curly horse."
